TRUMP – A (very) personal rant

A year ago today, Donald Trump became the President of the United States of America. A clueless. orange. beast. won against many dedicated politicians and was foolishly handed the keys to the most powerful office on the planet. A man, who endorses religious prejudice, incites political violence and mocks the disabled. A man, who openly treats women like they are worthless and degrades those fighting for equality. Nevertheless, America still irrationally elected Donald Trump as its leader.

What has he done in one year: he withdrew from the Paris Agreement on climate change, a travel ban on six Muslim–majority countries from entering the US, banning transgender troops from serving in the military, almost starting a nuclear war with North Korea.

Dear Muslims, Immigrants, Women, Disabled and All People of Colour: we love you – boldly and proudly. We will not break. We will stay strong.

Many people around the world have emphasised this point through countless protests against Trump’s policies. The Women’s March was a worldwide protest on January 21st, 2017. It advocated legislation and policies regarding: women’s rights, immigration reform, healthcare reform, reproductive rights, the environment, LGBTQ rights, racial equality, freedom of religion, workers’ rights and more! According to the organizers, it was meant to “send a bold message… that women’s rights are human rights”. It drew 440,000–500,000 people and worldwide participation was estimated at five million. The fact that it was the largest single day protest in U.S. history shows the empowering of the masses. It gave many people the voice and feeling of being able to make a positive change in the world.

Donald Trump joked about how good his presidency would be, “We will have so much winning if I get elected that you may get bored with winning.” A year later, hundreds of promises that got him into office are unfulfilled today. We’ve got about 1,100 days until he stops trying to destroy the world and finally crawls back to wherever he came from. But, I have faith that the Americans will have the sense to remove bullies like him. Therefore, as long as we place our trust in democracy and stand up for what’s right, WE can “Make America Great Again!”
