Martin-garrix-live-at-Ultra-Music-Fesival-Miami-2015Name: Martijn Gerard Garritsen (Martin Garrix)

Born: 14 May 1996 (Age 20), Amstelveen, Netherlands

Occupation: DJ, Record Producer, Musician

Genre: Big Room House, EDM, Progressive House, Electro House, Future Bass

“The reason I fell in love with electronic music was when I saw Tiesto in 2004 [at the Olympic Games in Athens]. [The music] had this groove, it was biological, it triggered emotions.”

Let’s have a look at his background – shall we!

At the age of 6, he began learning to play the guitar.

In 2004 he became interested in becoming a DJ after watching Tiesto perform at the Olympic Games in Athens.  He was inspired by the track “Traffic” which prompted him to download the software FL Studio and start composing his own music.

In 2013 he graduated from the Herman Brood Academy “I went to a school that taught us a lot about the music industry, as well as music production — about contracts and the business side of things, how to do interviews, about the media,” he explains.

Anyways, so how did he kickstart his career in music?

Well, he was discovered by Tiesto and signed to Spinnin’ Records in 2012, releasing “Error 404” through the label.

But it wasn’t until 2013 when he released the single “Animals” which became a hit throughout Europe and basically made him the youngest person to reach No.1 spot on Beatport. (Jealous?)

Also, in 2013 he made a deal with Scooter Braun’s (Garrix’s manager who has made people like Usher, Ariana Grande and JB famous – he’s kind of a big deal) ‘School Boy Records’.

Slight change of style

In 2015 he started experimenting with progressive trance and released “Forbidden Voices” as a gift for his 10 million Facebook likes.

The same year he left Spinnin’ Records and filed a lawsuit against his then manager because of disputes concerning the ownership of his music.

“I just want it all to be about music, and good vibes,” – don’t we all!?

“After Spinnin’ I was like, ‘I’m just going to do my own thing, my own label’, and it’s been crazy how well it has been doing. I’m expanding the team and we’re very soon going to start releasing music by other acts, not just me,”

So, STMPD RCRDS was born

He released his first single “Now That I’ve Found You“.

However, he doesn’t want to limit his label to EDM and is set on a journey to make his label more diverse. He also cites that Flume and Disclosure (Love ‘Em!) are among the artists that inspire him.

Others include: Richie Hawtin, Dubfire, Carl Cox and Seth Troxler

Garrix’s words of wisdom

  1. Road test your tracks before releasing them – this is one of the key factors that set him apart from his ‘peers’, plus 90% of the music he plays at festivals is original and fresh out of the studio.
  2. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE SHOW! Be entertaining and interact with the audience.
  3. If possible, record your shows and watch back to see how you can improve for next time – you know, keep evolving!
  4. And finally, balance is a key factor in Garrix’s life. He might spend the whole day making music in his studio, but the evenings are set aside for his family and friends.

So, there you have it! 😉
